IC/OOC contact

M'mri was a class O planet inhabited mainly by a mostly amphibious humanoid race. While a majority of the planet was covered by oceans it existed along a rather important trade route. Initial scans of the planet revealed that the plant life that existed both above and beneath the water could prove useful for medicinal purposes. Twenty years ago when the Federation had moved to send their first explorers to the planet they had assumed it was uninhabited. They, however had been wrong. Seconds before the away team could collect any samples an Ensign alerted her Captain to the fact that they were not alone. A few feet away a group of natives had surfaced. Before any contact could be made the Captain ordered the team to be beamed off the planet. A second, more thorough, scan of the planet revealed a number of cities beneath the water upon the ocean floor. Five years later, first contact was made and the Federation invited the inhabitants of M'mri into the Federation, offering protection from the more hostile races of the universe as well as a trade in technology and medical resources. The inhabitants had wanted it more than anything and, as such, had submitted to the Federation's own demands. They had built a turbo lift capable of transferring visitors from the mostly untouched islands of land to the large (now encapsulated and oxygen filled) cities beneath the ocean. It had taken a full fifteen years but reports from the planet had confirmed that it was mostly complete. The lift and the Capital city was ready for a visit from the Federation's ambassadors. As a courtesy to the planet's ruling class the Mrian's were allowed to choose the ship and crew who'd handle the negotiations. The young Prince, perhaps enamored by the reports he'd heard about the ship and it's brave young crew, had settled upon the Enterprise and James T. Kirk.

He didn’t belong there. When Kirk initially joined Starfleet he hadn’t really expected to make Captain… not really… but, in the event that he did, he honestly didn’t think his first mission would be diplomatic in nature. He had a feeling the Federation was only showing off their new Golden Boy. He’d become somewhat of a celebrity throughout the planets within the Federation since he and his crew had managed to save Earth. He just wished it didn’t make him feel like some sort of sideshow attraction. He liked the applause, sure, but he could do without the gaping and staring and… if one more person attempted to poke him or touch him to make sure he was real he was going to lose it! There was something very tiring about all this diplomatic bullshit. His face hurt from smiling, the muscles in his right arm burned from shaking hands, and he was pretty sure the left side of his shirt had been stretched beyond repair. He’d have to remove the metals and replicate a new one as soon as they returned to the Enterprise… whenever that happened. He was also pretty sure his arm was bruised. Oh well… at least repairing the bruising would give Bones something to do later… unless the doctor chose to let his body heal on its own again.

Moving through the considerable crowd which had gathered upon the land, Kirk offered a few charming smiles to the group of Mrians gathered around to catch a glimpse of him and the crew before all but rushing into the recently constructed Turbo Lift which would carry them all down towards the city. Once the doors had closed Kirk moved to lean against the reinforced glass walls and let out a sigh. "Is this really necessary?" He said, more to himself than the crew (their tour guide currently wasn't around and couldn't be offended or hurt by his words). Behind him he could barely make out the lights of the city as they descended slowly towards it. Within a few moments it would come into view in all of it's glory but Kirk found he couldn't bring himself to care too much. He was tired. While Spock and Bones had been allowed to collect samples of the various plant life upon the island, Kirk had spent his morning in a boring conversation with the young Prince about the announcement of M'mri's acceptance into the Federation and the celebration to follow. Kirk had always enjoyed a good party he just preferred when he didn't have to do any ass kissing prior to it. "So... we're sure this thing isn't going to flood and kill us all, right?" He turned his attention to Spock as if to see what his First Officer made of their current situation. It was no doubt Spock would have something to say. Kirk had been on his best behavior since setting foot upon the planet but he may have been flirting with the Prince (who was young but only by Mrian standards) and he may have been a little louder and more exhuberant than the somewhat reserved people who inhabited the planet but he hadn't punched anyone or picked an argument so he assumed he was in the clear.
